      Hi,
Where can I go ice skating (indoor or outdoor)? Are there many free places to skate? and where can I rent skates?
      Thanks

Hi Ryan, we do have multiple locations in Banff & Lake Louise to skate in the winter months.

In Lake Louise on the actual lake itself, there are 2 large rinks cleared and maintained daily by the Chateau Lake Louise and skates are available to rent inside the hotel. In the village, there is a covered outdoor rink located at the Lake Louise Recreation Center on Village road. A good place to rent skates is Wilson Mountain Sports located in the Samson Mall.

In Banff currently, we have one outdoor rink located outside the Fenlands Area. You can read more about that rink here The town has another rink in the works that will be located near the train station but is not operational yet. Although there is a fee involved the Fenlands Recreation Centre in Banff has multiple opportunities to skate indoors every week. The town of Banff does have many places to rent skates with my favorite being Snowtips Bactrax located on Bear Street.

Although it is possible to skate on some of the park’s natural water bodies such as the Bow River or Johnson lake it is strongly discouraged for safety reasons. The quality of the ice is generally poor anyways except for the beginning of the season when the ice is at its weakest point. This is what Parks Canada has to say about skating on natural ice surfaces.
