Hi, we’re planning to visit Banff for a few days at the end of this month and where wondering about good places to go ice fishing in the park as well as what the licensing requirements are. With the reported cold temperatures I’m sure there will be good ice but what kind of fish can we expect to catch? Thanks in advance

Hey, Ganzer. How exciting about your trip later this month. Unfortunately, although there is good fishing for various species of Trout in the Banff Parks Canada does not permit ice fishing. Not to worry because outside the park there are many lakes nearby where ice fishing is allowed. You can check out the Alberta Fishing Regulations here. Probably the best lake close by to the town of Banff is Spray Lakes. The action for Lake Trout is generally fantastic and you are allowed to keep 3 fish per person.

Wapiti Sports in Canmore is our local tackle shop and I’m sure they can provide an up-to-date conditions report on the local lakes. Not only do they sell licenses and gear but they also run guided ice fishing trips on Spray in heated huts. They can arrange transportation for you to be picked up in Banff or you can start the trip at their retail location in Canmore.
